The Story
RPGs are relatively scarce on mobile devices. Mobile gaming tends to be all about a quick fix of action rather than tense, hour-long battles over distant, mythical lands. Gameloft, however, has decided it’s high time it turned its skills to developing an RPG and has done just that in the shape of Eternal Legacy HD…
The Experience
Eternal Legacy makes no apologies for the fact that it borrows heavily from the Final Fantasy series. You play as the young warrior Astrian and your mission is to save Algoad from destruction and restore the living bond between humans and nature. Simple enough? Well good then.
An on-screen joypad controls your character and virtual action buttons allow you to interact with the scenery, other characters and the various chests containing potions and other goodies that you encounter along the way. Some characters can sell you armour and potions, others set you mini tasks to complete. but throughout each strand of the game, battle is more or less unavoidable, which is hugely irritating, particularly when you have a clear goal you’re trying to get to and you’re constantly pulled up by all manner of ghouls and goblins. You can try and avoid enemies but more often than not, you’ll be plunged into yet another fight you didn’t want to get into.
Ultimately we’re sure it elongates the game, but at the cost of enjoyment. Each battle sequence follows an overly familiar pattern. You’re ambushed by some wisps, or flying swords, or sentient treasure chests, you select a few attack moves, wait for them to be executed and then enjoy victory. You wander along for 30 seconds, and then you’re attacked again. Admittedly, some of the more challenging battles require a little more skill to win, but these tend to be at the end of each chapter, by which time you’ve already crashed your way through what seems like an endless streams of meaningless confrontations.
Game saves can only be made at predetermined points of the game via the Varsh Crystals located throughout each level, so if you need to stop playing for any reason, you may well find yourself replaying almost an entire chapter from the last save point. Varsh Crystals aren’t exactly littered around the place, which feels like another way of artificially increasing the life of the game.
We found Eternal Legacy’s gameplay frustrating to say the least, so much so that it felt like a chore to play. Whether you’re battling through to the end of a level for the sixth time because you’ve had to quit and haven’t been able to find a crystal to save your progress, or you find yourself battling identikit enemies for the umpteenth time, there’s a nagging sense that you’ve just wasted another few minutes that could have been spent playing something where you were actually making measurable progress. It’s the constant in-game distractions that make Eternal Legacy feel disjointed and ultimately jars you from the game’s storyline, which is a real shame because it’s a beautifully drawn game with bags of potential.
